Catalysts developer Acta says that its electrolyser prototype can generate hydrogen more cheaply than existing systems.

The test results are better than expected and a wider launch of the demonstration unit is planned for October 2009. The electrolyser will be demonstrated during the last quarter of 2009. Examples of fuel cell applications that can be supported by the electrolyser will also be demonstrated.

The electrolyser is precious metals free. Because a high pressure hydrogen stream can be produced it means that there is no need for compressors in a fuel cell system.

At 16.5p a share, up 3.5p on the day, Acta is valued at £6.76m. The shares have more than trebled over the past six months.

Interim figures will be published on Thursday 24 September 2009.
