Health clinics operator African Medical Investments has won a contract to open a clinic in Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania.
The clinic should be up and running before the end of 2009 and will include an emergency medical care and resuscitation unit, a minor operating theatre and an after-care facility. Occupational health and travel vaccination services will also be offered. More than 500,000 people go through the airport each year. AMI opened a clinic in Dar es Salaam earlier this year and patients could be referred to this clinic.
This will be the third airport clinic operated by AMI. The company has a clinic at Johannesburg International Airport and opened an airport medical & travel vaccination centre at Cape Town International Airport in May 2009. This has performed ahead of expectations, helped by the Confederations Cup football and the Lions rugby tour. The Cape Town clinic was profitable in June. There are plans to expand into the new terminal being built at the airport.
At 20p a share, AMI is valued at £22m. The share price has risen by 74% over the past three months.
The final payment, of up to 16m shares, for the acquisition of the company’s main subsidiary VIP Healthcare is dependent on the ‘relevant profits’ of VIP Healthcare for the year to February 2010.
