AMZ Holdings says that Penghu is holding a referendum on 26 September 2009 to gain local approval for plans to develop a gaming resort, which will boost the value of AMZ‘s land holdings.
Previous referenda have indicated that the population in favour of gaming.
AMZ is the largest and only private landholder on Penghu. Chairman Michael Treanor says that he believes that Penghu could become “the Hawaii or Bahamas-styled resort destination of the region”.
AMZ has obtained planning approval and is looking for a partner to participate in the licensing process. The Taiwan government will appoint a consultant to help it with the regulations and assess suitability of applicants.
The shares rose 4p to 133p a share, valuing AMZ at Ł21.4m.
