Microfuze International is diversifying through the acquisition of a water treatment technology developed in South Africa, but it insists that it is still pushing ahead with its own metal diffusion technology.

Western Utilities Corporation (Proprietary) Ltd is developing a pilot plant to use the technology to treat acid mine drainage. Microfuze is paying £7 for the company and the pilot plant is expected to cost an initial £600,000 with the full development cost forecast at £1.8m. Microfuze has raised £2.53m at 5p a share to cover these costs and further develop its metal diffusion technology. Microfuze’s management believes that having a wider range of interests will de-risk the company but both are still at an early stage of commercialisation.
Microfuze says it is still pushing ahead with its metal diffusion technology. It has switched its attention from diffusing chrome into steel to boronising. It is a thermochemical diffusion case hardening process wherein Boron is diffused into the metallic surfaces. The result is very hard, has excellent wear resistance, good oxidation resistance and good resistance to aqueous corrosion in chloride containing environment.
