Motive Television has moved into broadcast technology in recent months and it expects to make a number acquisitions.

Motive has decided to move into digital terrestrial television technology ahead of the analogue TV switch off in 2012. Leonard Fertig was appointed chief executive to take Motive in this new direction.

Motive has agreed worldwide distribution rights for BesTV outside of Spain and Italy, where it is already in use. This is middleware that allows DTT broadcasters to offer video on demand, pay per view and catch-up TV.

Motive has already identified potential DTT companies that could become part of a larger group.

The original TV programme production businesses are finding it tough. Motive’s revenues fell from £2.71m to £1.86m in the six months to June 2009. Cost cutting meant that the loss was reduced from £507,000 to £430,000. The cash pile is reducing but there was still £359,000 in the bank at the end of June 2009.

The Brown Eyed Boy subsidiary has produced a second series of ‘How Not To Live Your Life’ and a third is being negotiated. There is even the possibility of a toned down pilot for CBS in the US.

Motive has also won the contract to produce 38 live UEFA’s Champions League and Europa Cup matches each year for Irish broadcaster TV3 over the next three years. The contract starts next week.

Generally, though the focus for new commissions is the BBC because of poor TV advertising revenues.

At 0.56p a share, Motive is valued at £1.92m.
