Clean Air Power has signed an agreement to provide its technology for Volvo truck engines.

Clean Air’s Dual-Fuel combustion technology enables heavy-duty diesel engines to run on a combination of both diesel and natural gas. They are thought to be around 20% more efficient than standard engines. The technology will be integrated with Volvo’s engine management system and that should improve efficiency.

Shares in Clean Air rose 1.75p to 14.5p each, which values the company at £6.12m.

Volvo is the largest truck engine maker in the world and brands that use the engines include Renault, Mack, Nissan Diesel and Volvo itself.

The deal covers Volvo’s D13 engine and the two companies have already started working together. Clean Air’s technology still has to achieve milestones relating to gas substitution levels, emissions compliance, performance and durability testing in order for the agreement to move to contract stage.

A formal contract is expected to be finalised in the middle of 2009. The first commercial products should be available by 2010.
