LED and photonics technology manufacturer ProPhotonix Ltd has slashed its first quarter loss.

ProPhotonix reported a loss of $214,000 in the first quarter of 2011, down from $1.32m in the first quarter of 2010. The overhead base was flat. The cash outflow from operating activities declined from $1.35m to $641,000. Net debt was $1.78m at the end of March 2011.

Revenues grew by one-quarter to $4.34m. The growth came from the LED division where revenues jumped from $1.3m to $2.3m and this also helped gross margins to improve. Demand from the German solar equipment industry boomed in the period. North America is becoming increasingly important and it accounted for 38% of overall sales.

Lower demand from homeland security customers hit the sales of diodes.

The order book is worth $6.4m.

The Regulation S shares are trading at 20p.
