Proton Power Systems

Proton Power Systems has secured a contract manufacturer for its fuel cells.

Germany-based Proton has always had good potential products but never had the capacity to satisfy demand if they are commercialised. Deutsche Mechatronics will be able to produce up to 5,000 fuel cell systems each year.

Potential customers will be reassured that Proton can supply their orders. There will also be economies of scale from the increased level of manufacturing.

Earlier in May 2009, Proton launched the first passenger bus using its triple-hybrid fuel cell technology. The bus was developed with Skoda Electric, UJV Nuclear Research Institute Rez plc and it has no combustion engine. The system uses less than half the energy of a diesel bus. The range is 250km and the maximum speed is 65km/hour. This vehicle will be used in Prague from this summer.

The share price recovered 1.375p to 6.875p, valuing Proton at £5.64m. The administrator of Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander has been reducing its stake in the company and it is below 3%.

Figures for 2008 will need to be published before the end of June 2009.
