Optare designs and assembles singe and double deck buses. It was formed when the company, then known as Darwen Holdings, acquired East Lancashire Coachbuilders Ltd in August 2007. It subsequently acquired Leyland Product Developments and then bus maker Optare for £15.95m, from Darwen's chairman Roy Stanley, in the summer of 2008 and changed its name to Optare. The placing to finance the purchase raised £16m (£14.97m net) at 40p a share.
