Westminster Group

Overview

Banbury-based Westminster Group supplies security, defence, fire and safety products and systems. These include pipeline security systems, explosives detection, surveillance systems, diver detection, border security, covert tracking, blast protection, fire detection systems, emergency lighting, nursecall systems and flood detection systems. The business was started in 1988 and then it was acquired by Menvier-Swain in 1990. Current chief executive Peter Fowler led a management buyout in 1996. At that stage Westminster was still a UK-focused business but in 2000 it decided that international business would help it achieve better margins. Later that year the non-core businesses were acquired by Chubb for £3.1m. Westminster retained its manufacturing facility and office in Banbury and concentrated on international business. The manufacturing business was sold in 2006. RMS Integrated Solutions, which provides fire, safety, security and TV distribution systems in the UK, was acquired in 2006. This has made the UK a more important market than previously. Westminster joined Aim on 21 June 2007, when it raised £3.1m (£2.5m net) at 67.5p a year. This placing was equivalent to one-third of the enlarged share capital.
